Neighborhoods: San Geronimo Valley
The San Geronimo Valley is the sort of place where people really get to know their neighbors, and where they don’t feel the need to lock their doors. The area’s communities have a true small town, countryside feel while still being close enough to San Francisco for a reasonable commute and near enough to the county’s other towns for easy access to all of Marin’s services. The valley isn’t without its own amenities, with country markets and delis, two restaurants, and a small motel, but take the time to visit and you’ll see the rolling hills, wide open meadows, crystal clear creeks, and unbeatable outdoor recreation are the draw. Living here means instant access to hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and world class golf. Also high on San Geronimo Valley’s bragging list are the Lagunitas and San Geronimo Schools, which give parents a choice between open classroom, Montessori, and Waldorf-Inspired programs.

San Geronimo Valley Neighborhoods
Lagunitas
This is the next town after Forest Knolls and is set deeper in the redwoods. It has a little downtown area and a great deli to pick up sandwiches if you are heading out west to the beach. Homes run the gamut from smaller and funky to more substantial and stylish, and with all the trees sunny lots are at a premium. The area offers convenient access to Samuel P. Taylor State Park, which is great for camping, picnicking or exploring the bike path. There’s also a secret watering hole where you’ll often find people jumping off the rocks to swim on warmer days.
Forest Knolls
Forest Knolls is a little bit more funky than Woodacre. It has a little downtown area with a pizza place, bar, post office and antique shops. The neighborhood just recently remodeled their little kids park near downtown which is kind of cute. We tend to like the homes on the north side of Sir Francis drake which tend to get more sun. It’s a groovy place to live.
San Geronimo
Like Woodacre, San Geronimo is set in a serene setting and it has a great golf course and it’s own huge redwood grove, perfect for hiking. Some of the homes here are modest unless you are around the golf course. The homes around the golf course are beautiful and newer construction.
Woodacre
Woodacre has to be one of Marin’s best kept secrets. You drive over the hill and five minutes out of Fairfax all of a sudden you’re in the countryside. It doesn’t really have a downtown but it does have a great community center with a pool and a baseball field, and the beautiful San Geronimo golf course is close by. Most of the homes are modest yet many are charming, and the schools are great. If you’re looking for a more rural setting without all the hustle and bustle, “the valley’” as we call it would be a good place to start.
Nicasio
An amazing setting with rolling hills and horse ranch properties, as well as some larger cattle farms. The actual town itself is tiny, anchored by the Rancho Nicasio restaurant and bar, where you can have dinner while listening to live music. Around the corner is a famous pumpkin patch, where schools in the area bring kids every October to pick Halloween pumpkins. Many of Nicasio’s homes are larger in scale and most are built on large parcels, though there are some smaller homes as well. A small portion of Nicasio is in the redwood groves but most of the area is very sunny and very serene.
