Upscale Shops and a Farmers Market at Marin Country Mart

Wow, what a turn around at the old Larkspur Landing! We recently stumbled upon the Farmers Market, open every Saturday between 9am and 2pm. It’s the perfect place to bring the kids, eat lunch and let them run around the open grassy area or lounge with friends on the large picnic tables and benches. The vibe was amazing. There was live folk/bluegrass music and really yummy food, and the kids went on a pony ride and fed the ducks in the pond. It’s a great place to check out on a Saturday and meet up with your friends for lunch.

The mall has an open, family-friendly style, with a great combination of artisan foodie shops, high end boutiques, restaurants, and a yummy yogurt shop. Marin Brewing company is still there and a great place to sit out on the patio and have a beer and lunch. There are many new shops coming soon and I have a hunch this will be the new cool place to hang out and shop like it used to be 25 years ago. Check out their website for more info.

Dine out on April 12th to help Marin County School Volunteers!

Here’s a chance to have some tasty food while supporting a great cause. Have a meal at one of the participating restaurants on Tuesday April 12th and a percentage of your check will go to support the fantastic work of Marin County School Volunteers, a group that matches volunteer tutors with Marin school kids. The list includes popular eateries such as Jason’s in Greenbrae and Pacific Catch in Corte Madera. For a full list visit the MCSV website. And if you’re looking for a regular way to give back to the community consider volunteering as a tutor!

Reservations are suggested and be sure to mention Marin County School Volunteers to make sure your meal will be counted as part of the event.

A great time to visit Marin waterfalls

With all the rain we’re having it’s a perfect time to check out Marin County’s waterfalls, and Fairfax is a good place to start.  One of our favorites is easy to get to and just a 10 minute walk from the road. Park at the top of Sir Francis Drake on the right as you hit the summit out of Fairfax and before descending into Woodacre. It’s a big waterfall and a nice hike for the kids or dog.

Also in Fairfax, Cataract Falls is one of the most popular in Marin and a good hike as well. There are a couple of ways to access it, and you’ll find good directions here.

Also, check out the waterfall at the end of Mountain View Dr. in San Rafael’s Dominican neighborhood. It’s handy as you don’t really have to hike to get there.

And at the north end of the county there’s the Arroyo de San Jose Waterfall on the trail at the end of Fairway Dr. in Novato. It’s also a nice hike and fun for the kids.

And if you’re really into exploring all the waterfalls Marin County has to offer you might want to check out Waterfallswest.com. It’s now a pay site but looks to be the most comprehensive resource.

Big Changes in the Works for the Ross Valley School District

In order to accommodate rising elementary school enrollment in Fairfax and San Anselmo the Ross Vally School District Board is in the process of redrawing the boundaries that determine which school goes with which neighborhood. It’s part of a process that will also split the two Brookside Elementary campuses into separate K-5 schools.

According to the RSVD website the aim of the changes will be to:

  • Create and maintain four, independent “k-5” schools of similar size
  • Prioritize enrollment for residents who live closest to a school site and within its boundary – taking into consideration natural geographic boundaries – to:
    • enable and encourage walking and biking to school, and
    • minimize the number of people traveling by car.
  • Align with Safe Routes to School for students who walk or bike to school.
  • Maintain accessibility to District-wide programs (e.g., MAP and the Learning Center).
  • Minimize the number of current students who must change schools during the transition phase as a result of these boundary adjustments.

Jack Schreder & Associates, the consulting firm the board hired, has come up with four scenarios for redrawing the boundaries. They say that they’re now going to look at more tax assessor and census data, get input from the Board of Trustees, district staff, and the community, and then do some recalculating before presenting a final scenario.

There’s a special board meeting tomorrow night at White Hill Middle School to discuss the process. The Powerpoint presentation outlining the four enrollment boundary options is available here.  For more info visit the RVSD website or contact the district office at 415.454.2162.

Views from Marin’s Fort Baker

Fort Baker, Marin County, California

I took this photo earlier this week while touring Marin with an out of state friend.  I was surprised at how lovely it turned out with San Francisco nestled in the clouds across the bay. The photo was taken at Fort Baker, on top of the bunkers at the tip of by the bay.

Lockboxes: Yea or Nay?

If you are selling your home, one of the considerations will be whether or not to include a lockbox on your house.

What is a lockbox?

A lockbox is a metal box that typically attaches to the door of a home.  House keys are placed inside to allow another real estate professional to access the property.  Lockboxes are only accessible by agents who subscribe to the mulitple listing service and have a code to access the home.  They either have an electronic key or an application on their smart phone.  Once they enter the code they can open the box and remove the house key.

Are lockboxes safe?

The lockbox key codes update each evening, so any agent who loses their “key” or is removed from the system will not be able to open the lockbox.  We used to leave keys at the office for agents who wanted to show a home.  Lockboxes reduced lost keys and the expense involved in rekeying a property.  Lockbox showing information can be downloaded by the agent to track who views the home and how often.

Should you use a lockbox?

Well, that depends!  Lockboxes allow for tremendous flexibility for showing agents.  Homes that use lockboxes are more likely to be shown because of the their ease of use and showing hours can be set up so an appointment is not necessary.  Sad but true, many agents won’t show an appointment only listing because it requires too much advance preparation to set up the appointments.  Additionally, many buyers feel more comfortable viewing homes when the listing agent and home seller are not present.  Buyers are more likely to spend more time at properties where they feel they can view and talk freely.

What if someone steals my stuff?

Even with an agent in the property, theft could still occur. The best way to prevent theft is to remove valuables and prescription drugs before you put your home on the market.

When shouldn’t I use a lockbox?

We do not use lockboxes on many of our luxury properties (2+million).  We want to make sure prospective buyers are qualified and we  require a personal walk through with a member of our team to explain all of the unique features of the home.  Additionally, the quantity of showings on a multi-million dollar home is significantly lower, making it easier to accommodate scheduling requests.

In general, we are strong believers in the use of lockboxes.  The more showings you have, the greater opportunity you have to sell your home.  If you are considering selling, please contact us!

Marin County Summer Camp Fair

It’s still February, we saw snow on Mt. Tam in the last week and yes, it is also summer camp registration time!   The choices for summer camps for kids in Marin can be overwhelming and some great programs fill up very early.  We registered for a coveted horseback riding camp in early January after being declined two years in a row!

Add some warmth to your winter: Sorella Caffe in Fairfax

Sorella Caffe in Fairfax is one of our favorite local places to bring the whole family. The name means “sister” in Italian–appropriate as it’s owned by two sisters–and the food, ambiance and service are top notch. We eat here often and both sisters are always there to greet us. Using fresh, organic ingredients, the pasta and seafood dishes are excellent and you have to try the Mista salad with their homemade salad dressing–a secret recipe.

With a fireplace and live music on the weekends, the ambience is very relaxed and it’s a great place to bring the kids, who especially love the big block of parmesan cheese they bring to your table to start out your dinner and the big bowl of gummy bears and animal cookies they bring out for free after your meal. We’ve eaten here probably thirty times and the service has always been amazing.  This is one of our favorite restaurants in Marin. Check it out and let us know what you think!

High scoring schools & great commute for 629K in San Anselmo

Stephen just brought on a new two bedroom, two bath view home at 14 Island Drive in San Anselmo. It’s a cute house in a beautiful setting with lots of cool deck areas, including a sort of secret hot tub area through a door off the hallway. It has a nice updated kitchen, a living room with vaulted ceilings and fireplace, and a two-car garage. Definitely worth a look if you’re in the market for a two bedroom home. It’s on the very eastern edge of San Anselmo, so you get high scoring schools and a good commute to SF.
