Remembering 911

It is hard to believe it has been seven years since the United States was brutally attacked and two airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center.   I can remember very clearly where I was at that time, as I am sure most of you can.  I had a brand new baby in my arms.  I was basking in the glow of motherhood when I got the terrible call to turn on the news.

My good friend, Jay Thompson, felt like people were starting to forget. He went on a search for a spreadsheet or text file with all of the victims names listed. He couldn’t find what he was looking for, so in true Jay style, be created his own excel spreadsheet listing all of the victims of the 911 attack.

The list of victims of the 911 attack is four columns wide and 754 rows long.

It brought me chills to read through the list.  The magnitude of loss on that day is staggering.

The youtube video below is a reminder of what I experienced on the morning of 911.  I watched the events on television.  I wasn’t in New York, and I didn’t lose a loved one or close personal friend.  I did lose a “sister” so to speak.  One of my fellow Junior League of San Francisco members, Melissa Harrington Hughes, was in the World Trade Center and lost her life that day.

Regardless of how close or how removed we may have been, I think it is important that we never forget.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of all those people who lost their lives.

Hug your own loved ones today.

Why fight the 101 Marin traffic?

IMG_3000

If you don’t like living in the fog, these pictures demonstrate is an excellent reason to drive just a couple more exits north on the 101 freeway.  As you can see, the fog sits on the mountains between Mill Valley and Corte Madera/Larkspur.  While Mill Valley, Tiburon, Belvedere, Sausalito and San Francisco are socked in with fog, often the rest of Marin is sunny (and frequently 5-10 degrees warmer).

Unfamiliar with Marin?  It is important to understand the many weather micro-climates of the communities. A few miles (even within the same city) can mean a substantial difference in fog, light, wind, sunshine, and even rain.

Marin Real Estate Market Update- August 2008

This is my first Marin County real estate update via video.

Please excuse the ummmms and enjoy the snapshot of what is happening in Marin Real Estate!

What is in a name?… Corte Madera

Corte Madera = chopped wood in Spanish.  When the city of San Francisco was being constructed, the Corte Madera area was known for producing lumber out of redwood trees.

And a name was born…

Marin Breakfast Hot Spots

Looking for a great spot to grab breakfast in Marin?  Here are some of my favorite Marin restaurants for breakfast.

  • Cafe Z Epicerie – Greenbrae – I really love Cafe Z.  It helps that it is across the street from my office, but the food is stellar too.  Crepes, great omelettes, yummy yogurt/granola/ fruit bowl.
  • Half Day Cafe – Kentfield – Amazing scones, tons of variety on the menu, great Kentfield location, nice atmosphere, plenty of seating.  You can catch me Half Day Cafe often!
  • Dipsea Cafe – Mill Valley – A class Marin breakfast spot, Dipsea has to make my list.  Still one of my favorites, all though the service has been really slow the last few times I have been here.
  • La Boulange – Mill Valley – The best lattes.  Truly.  Get the latte bowl!  The quiche is amazing too.
  • Toast- Mill Valley – Huevos Rancheros.  Enough said.  Actually, I love almost everything I have tried at Toast.  The service is always excellent, the food is delicious.  Great for breakfast or lunch.
  • Hilda’s Coffee Shop- San Anselmo – Hilda’s is true greasy spoon and it is fabulous.  Everything on the menu is excellent but the german pancakes?  Out of this world.  Share a stack with a friend.
